First meeting for the 4th Philippine Bird Festival - Puerto Princesa
1. The 4th Philippine Bird Festival will be held on September
12-13, 2008. The festival proper and Fellowship Dinner will
be held on September 12. Birdwatching activities and Farewell
Dinner on September 13. Birdwatching activities will be held
in Irawan watershed, Iwahig with a visit to the Palawan Wildlife
and Conservation Center. Other sites are also considered ie
St. Paul's National Park for incidental birding. Details and
options will be discussed on a later date.
2. The festival logo featuring the Palawan
Peacock-pheasant by Arnel Telesforo was presented and comments
3. After considering different venues, WBCP
president and vice-president deem the Puerto Princesa City
Coliseum as the most appropriate venue for the festival. Colisuem
administrator had confirmed the venue is available on September
4. Melissa Macasaet will contact coliseum
admistrator to provide information regarding the dimensions
of the floor area and check if tents/booths are available
in the Puerto Princesa.
5. Organizations in Palawan that may be given
a booth at the festival include the Katala Foundation, WWF-Philippines,
Conservation International, Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation
Center (formerly Crocodile Institute), Haribon Palawan, Palawan
Council for Sustainable Development, Bantay Kalikasan.
6. Other organizations to be invited are
Isla Foundation, Philippine Eagle Foundation, Cebu Biodiversity
and Conservation Foundation, and bird clubs from the region
ie Taiwan, HK, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, China, Japan,
7. It is suggested that bird festival delegates
be booked at the Asturias Hotel as this hotel is nearer to
the festival venue. The LGU maiontains a corporate account
with the Asturias Hotel and may extend the same rates for
8. Target number of participants is 800 high
school students in the morning and 800 grade school students
in the afternoon. Joie Matillano has been assigned to coordinate
with the schools.
9. The Katala Foundation, WWF-Phils, Palawan
Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center, Palawan Ornithological
Society and WBCP will be assigned slots in the program.
10. Katala Foundation, Conservation International
and Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center will be
asked to contribute articles about their organizations for
the souvenir program since these NGOs have existing projects
in Palawan. Birdwatch Palawan (a newly-formed birding club)
will also be asked to contribute an article to promote birdwatching
as a hobby.
11. Nicky Icarangal will write an article
about his experience as a bird guide in Palawan.

In a dinner meeting with Mayor Hagedorn at
the residence of Robert Brinks in Makati, the mayor agreed
to sponsor the festival venue, tender a Welcome Dinner for
the festival delegates on September 11 and be the guest speaker
during the Opening Ceremonies on September 12.
