Mt. Kitanglad Mountain Range (Mindanao Montane Birding) - September
27-September 30, 2010
Optional Tour Extension: PICOP, Bislig, Surigao del Sur. (Mindanao
Lowland Birding) – September 30 – October 3, 2010
Day 1: Davao to Mt. Kitanglad, Bukidnon
We will have an early morning departure by van and travel for
around three to four hours to Dalwangan, Bukidnon, a small village
that will be our take off point to Mt. Kitanglad Mountain Range.
Mt. Kitanglad, is one the highest peaks in the Philippines and
is home to the Philippine Eagle, the country's national bird.
We will then proceed on foot or on horseback to the Del Monte
Lodge, very rustic and basic accommodations in the foothills
of Mt. Kitanglad. Trekking upto the Del Monte Lodge will take
about one hour. We will do a bit of birding around our camp
and in the evenings we will try to look for endemic nightbirds
such as the Bukidnon Woodcock, Mindanao Scops Owl and Philippine
Frogmouth.
Days 2 & 3: Mt. Kitanglad and surroundings.
We will have two full days in Mt. Kitanglad to search for Mindanao
montane endemics. Our main target will be the Great Philippine
Eagle, one of the biggest raptors in the world. Other endemics
that we will be looking for are the funky-looking Apo Mynah,
endemic flowerpeckers and sunbirds such as the Olive-capped
Flowerpecker and Grey-hooded and Apo Sunbirds, Black and Cinnamon
Fantail, Cinnamon Ibon, Mindanao Ibon (or Blackmasked White-eye),
McGregors's Cuckoo-shrike, Yellow-bellied Whistler, White-cheeked
Bullfinch among others.
Day 4: Mt. Kitanglad to Cagayan de Oro or Mt. Kitanglad
to PICOP, SUrigao del Sur (Tour Extension)
We will depart in the morning and start the trek down to Dalwangan
village. We will then board vans and travel two to three hours
to Cagayan de Oro Airport for flight back to Manila. Those taking
the extension, we will proceed to Bislig, Surigao del Sur on
the eastern sode of Mindanao. Travel time will around 8 hours
from Dalwangan to Bislig, Surigao del Sur. Bislig will serve
as our base for our birding in PICOP, a former logging concession
that operates in the lowland forest of Mindanao. Overnight in
Paper Country Inn, Bislig, Surigao.
Day 5 & 6: PICOP and surroundings.
We will start early and proceed to the birding site in PICOP.
This is site is one of the reliable sites for Mindanao lowland
endemics. Though, a lot of the habitat is being destroyed by
illegal logging and illegal settlers, this is still a good site
for Writhed, Rufous and Mindanao Hornbills, Blue-capped and
Silvery Kingfishers, Black-faced Coucal, Red-bellied and Steere’s
(Azure-breasted) Pitta, Celestial and Short crested Monarchs.
The few remaining patches of forests also host several species
of the doves and pigeons such as Black-chinned Fruitdoves, Amethyst
Brown-dove and other imperial pigeons. Overnight in Paper Country
Inn.
Day 7: PICOP to Davao to Manila.
We will have our last day for birding in PICOP and then we will
drive for 4 hours to Davao airport and go back to Manila.
